KEY FOR DENTAL HEALTH IS PREVENTIVE DENTAL CARE

SKIPPING REGULAR DENTAL EXAMS IS TEMPTING, BUT COSTLY

Ø  Preventive Care:

Preventive dentistry is the modern way of reducing the amount of dental treatments necessary to maintain a healthy mouth. The two major causes of tooth loss are decay and gum disease. The joint efforts of the dentist and patient will help prevent needs for extensive treatments.

Maintaining optimal oral health not only gives patients a brighter, healthier smile, but may also help them fend off many potentially chronic diseases. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, research indicates a link between periodontal disease and many serious health conditions including heart disease.

v Exam & Cleaning

There's a common misperception that dental care is a luxury, and it's time to set the record straight. Regular dental exams (aka "dental checkups") are just like regular medical exams and physicals - both are preventive measures to help you stay healthy in the long run. What's more, your oral health and overall health are inextricably intertwined: Gum disease has been linked to diabetes pregnancy has been linked to tooth loss and stress may cause TMJ, dry mouth syndrome and other dental problems.

The best way, if not the only way, to protect yourself against dental health disasters is to stay on top of your dental exams/dental checkups.

A standard dental exam for adults typically involves checking for dental problems that can range from cavities, gum disease and tooth root decay to broken teeth, enamel erosion and bite problems like TMD. If it's been longer than year since you've seen a dentist, you'll get a complete set of X-rays, too. Either your dentist or a dental hygienist will give you a professional dental cleaning to remove plaque or tartar buildup. And finally, your dentist will design a dental treatment plan for you based on what he or she finds during your dental exam.

Skipping Exams Is Tempting, but Costly

It's understandable that you might be tempted to skip regular dental exams/dental checkups when the economy is bad or if you're experiencing a financial crunch. But brushing and flossing aren't enough to keep your dental health in tip-top shape. And the fact is putting professional dental care on hold can result in serious dental problems later - and treatments that are much more costly

v Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screening is a routine part of a dental examination. Regular check-ups, including an examination of the entire mouth, are essential in the early detection of cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions. You may have a very small, but dangerous, oral spot or sore and not be aware of it.

  • Oral Cancer often starts as a tiny, unnoticed white or red spot or sore anywhere in the mouth.

  • It can affect any area of the oral cavity including the lips, gum tissue, check lining, tongue and the hard or soft palate.

  • Other signs include:

    • A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal

    • A color change of the oral tissues

    • A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area

    • Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips

    • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the jaw or tongue.

    • A change in the way the teeth fit together

  • Oral Cancer most often occurs in those who use tobacco in any form.

  • Alcohol use combined with smoking greatly increases risk.

  • Prolonged exposure to the sun increases the risk of lip cancer.

  • Oral cancers can occur in people who do not smoke and have no other known risk factors.

  • Oral Cancer is more likely to strike after age 40.

  • Studies suggest that a diet high in fruits and vegetables may prevent the development of potentially cancerous lesions.

v Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water. Every day, minerals are added to and lost from a tooth's enamel layer through two processes, demineralization and remineralization. Minerals are lost (demineralization) from a tooth's enamel layer when acids -- formed from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth -- attack the enamel. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth.
